When I was in elementary school, higher level thinking was not required. On tests, quizzes, and daily lives, I just simply had to answer the questions and ask the questions that are basic. As we get into middle school, we are asked to answer more complex questions. Some questions have many answers and there are many ways to approach it. For high school, asking a meaningful and complex question is the lesson. To ask a question, it does not only require your curiosity of the topic, it also requires your basic knowledge, and your higher level thinking. In high school classes, most questions are not answered by the teacher, but by ourselves. Now, even some questions are not asked by the teacher, but also by ourselves.
The most fresh and new skill that I learned in my general chemistry class is that we had to design our own labs. We were first asked to do the lab, then later extend the topic and design our own lab. To design a lab, the most important thing is the research question. Without a research question, there would be nothing to experiment. As we design the lab, we did not only have to fully understand the unit, but also add new branches to it. For example, we had to design a titration lab. Titration itself was a concept hard to learn. After all, we had to extend the topic and design a titration lab that we can find even more than what we learn in our class. For my lab, my research question was "How does the change in concentration of HCl solution affect the rate of reaction of HCl and CaCO3?". This questions leads to an experiment that we have to do in order to find out the answer for the question. Also, it is based upon the knowledge we learned from the class.
Questioning and posing complex problems show your understanding of the material and prove your ability to use higher level thinking to solve problems. This is a skill required to be competent for your job and everything else in life. In the future, I should always try to ask questions, ask complex and high level questions.
